Evolving Canvas
Acrylic paint on canvas

2024-present
24 × 24

In December 2024 I was trying to get into the practice of painting more frequently. Starting has always been the hardest part for me; I put pressure on myself to make something “good” or “well designed”.

I wanted to challenge that thought, so I got this canvas out, and told myself that it was fine if I didn’t like it, because I could always paint over it. Spoiler Alert: I didn’t like it— so I painted over it the next day. This has evolved into an ongoing exercise where I continue to use the same canvas, painting over the previous layer.

The exercise is about the act of painting without expectation of outcome. Focusing on the process, exploring brush strokes, the texture of the medium… and getting rid of old tubes of paint lol.

After a few sessions, I noticed the canvas was getting heavy from all the paint… so I began weighing it! Maybe I’ll carve into it with an Xacto knife at some point…
